5 out of 5 stars In-Depth Instructions for Mental Ray   December 8, 2009

This is definitely an excellent step-by-step tutorial to achieve very professional looking 3D architectural renderings with 3ds Max and mental ray.

The book is very well laid out. It has numbered instructions to follow along with color illustrations with highlighting in red to follow. So not only do you get the written instructions but the photos with red highlighting and arrows to doubly ensure understanding.

You will be able to achieve any sort of lighting for both interior and exterior, smooth and textured surfaces, and color correction in your finished rendering.

This book walks you through the steps with clarity.

5 out of 5 stars A well-organized and comprehensive book   December 7, 2009

Co-branded with Autodesk, this is a comprehensive and authoritative book on creating realistic, lifelike architectural renderings with 3ds Max and mental ray. Discussion is limited to materials and lighting, so prior knowledge of modeling/CAD is required. It is intended for intermediate to advanced 3ds users only.

The book is well-organized and very easy to follow. Every step is numbered and very clearly described, accompanied by large color screenshots throughout. The menus and buttons are prominently marked with red arrows, underlines, or boxes to show the relevant settings to modify or button to click. The steps are very detailed and specific. Example: Step 12: "In the Bitmap Parameters, Coordinates rollout, change the Blur value to 0.2". Far from being just a recipe book, the chapters go over key lighting concepts and rendering terms and how the different tools and setting affect the final render. Two bonus chapters (PDF) are available for download on the publisher's website, along with all the project files from each chapter.

This is an excellent and practical resource for architectural students and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed guide to Mental ray, Photomontage and Verified views   December 14, 2009

3DS Max ia a pretty comprehensive and detailed software for architectural modeling - which involves detailed & comprehensive work on various aspects of a creating a architectural diagram, rendering and presenting it.

This book is not a 3DS Max tutorial or a introduction, but for more advanced users.

What this book covers:
- Mental ray : Lighting, shadow ....
- photo montage : Designing elements of a real photo into your architecture
- Verified view : Presenting for planning and marketing

The book does not waste any time and energy in the basics, but jumps straight into practicals from page 1 with screen shots from the sofware with exact instructions on what to click and what to do to get these effects into your architecture.

5 out of 5 stars How to add the finishing touches on your 3d CAD project   December 22, 2009

This book, from Autodesk (the makers of the Autocad and 3dsmax software series) is very comprehensive in helping you apply materials and lighting and other elements to turn your well detailed 3D model into something awesome and realistic when using 3DSmax and mental ray.

It's that final finish that always takes me the most time, when 3D modelling. What do I blur, how fine a texture should I use? How do I go about this and that?

Every detail of the process is laid out. Buttons, commands, menu options, it's all covered with the kind of nice detailed instructions you'd expect from a company in the design business. It's not easy and dumbed down... this is professional level assistance, but I don't think it's too dense for the novice user.

Just remember, this isn't a book on basic drafting or 3D modeling. You need to be able to make or have access to a nice detailed 3D model. But I think it's not too hard to make something like that. Turning that into a presentation class image, in a world of Playstation 3s and special effects TV shows, takes an attention to detail and a set of skills. This provides both. Just open to page one, and read the entire thing. Don't hunt for help with one or two elements. I tried that, and I found I get great results now that I simply followed the entire book's advice on various aspects of realistic rendering. If you need help with the rest of the process, look into modeling books. Heck, just playing around isn't the worst way to learn how to model. But most folks will need some instructions to get realism.

Have fun! This is such a blast to do well. You'll be impressed with what your software can accomplish!

As a veteran user of the program 3ds Max I know that there are always new things that can be learned in the course of using the application.I found this book very helpful when using Mental Ray to create a more realistic rendition of a couple of my previous creations. The details and step by step processes given in this book are clearly written not only for the veteran user but beginners as well. This makes it easier to learn Mental Ray and all of its capabilities.
